The intention of writing the book “Concept of Freshwater Aquaculture” is to fulfill the aspirations of a large number of students who are studying the course of Fisheries Science all over India, so that they can utilize this as a textbook and get a comprehensive idea regarding the freshwater aquaculture in India.
From the experience of teaching in the subject of Industrial Fish and Fisheries it was felt that though hundreds of books are available in the market in the subject of Fisheries Science written on different aspects, but the number of books in the textbook category is very meagre. The need of textbooks on different aspects of fishery was felt since long time.
Fisheries Science is a broad area under the biological sciences. There are two methods of obtaining fish from different water bodies.
- i) They may be scientifically captured or harvested from a vast water body like seas or oceans, lakes, rivers, estuaries, etc. where culture of fish is practically impossible; or,
- ii) They may be cultured/cultivated or reared from juvenile to marketable size in such water bodies which are manageable and after attaining marketable size, fishes may be harvested for marketing.
The first method comes under the domain of the capture fisheries and the second method comes under the domain of the culture fisheries or aquaculture.
The intention of the author is to provide a students’ friendly textbook on freshwater aquaculture in India. The contents of the book have been selected on the basis of the syllabus of Fisheries Science of different universities of the country so that this book could be utilized as textbook by all the students of fisheries science throughout the country. It is hoped by the author that this book will not only help the students to acquire knowledge regarding freshwater aquaculture but will also help the freshwater aquaculturists to improve the production of different types of fishes in scientific way.
